"Athlete of the Month" for October!

Sarah Cuddeback, grade 11, volleyball (setter)

“Sarah continues to be a great role model for her teammates,” Coach Heather Justian writes. “She is always positive and works hard on and off the court. Sarah is always trying to up her game.”

Kaitlyn Dusseau (forward) and Kelsey Nelson (mid-fielder), grade 12, field hockey

“These two girls bring a lot of encouragement and motivation to the team,” Coach Heather Susek writes. “They are always looking for ways to build team unity and inspire younger athletes with their energy and enthusiasm. Kailyn usually brings the music to pump up the team for long bus rides, and both girls are always willing and eager to learn more.”

Kaitlyn finished the season with three goals and three assists, and Kelsey finished with seven goals and eight assists.

Salla Makinen, grade 12, girls varsity soccer (center mid-field)

“Salla gives 100 percent when she is playing soccer,” Coach Melinda Sheppard writes. She came to our team with lots of experience that she shared with the tem from day one. She was a leader on the team. Salla also had a powerful kick that her teammates knew to avoid.

Ethan Manning, 11, soccer (goal keeper)

“Ethan was a tremendous asset to our team,” Coach Justin Vossler writes. “While being recognized as a standout keeper in the league, he was also a leader in practice and an important voice of experience and knowledge on a young team.”

Jenna Morris, grade 10, cross-country

“Jenna is the consummate runner,” Coach John Owen writes. “She trains hard, races harder and cheers on everyone. She supports her teammates and leads by example. Her results speak for themselves, but her work ethic and personality make her a great athlete.”

*The Citizen has selected Jenna as their girls cross country runner of the year.

Jared Russell, grade 11, cross-country

“Jared is an incredibly hard worker,” Coach Owen writes in his nomination. “He leads by example and always put his best foot forward when it comes to both training and racing.”

Joe Shoemaker, grade 11, football (tail back and linebacker)

“Joe is one of those natural athletes that, if he ever decided to work hard off-season, then look out!” Coach Fred Ott writes. “Joe seems to be in the football conversation with the coaches every week. Good, dependable player on both sides of the ball.”

*Joe was named ESPN athlete of the week for the Newfield game, as well as the Citizens and Northern Bank player of the game from the TAE game on Sept. 30.
