Congratulations to everyone for bringing in so many containers! As a school, we brought in over 5,200 containers!

As a school, we collected all the #5 plastic we could and donated it to a company in Cortland called Preserve, which takes #5 plastic and recycles it into new products. We did this project because at this time #5 plastic is not recyclable in Cayuga County. When we dropped off the plastic we found out that Preserve is the company that manufactures the trash bags we use in our school! We're proud of how much plastic we were able to keep out of the landfill!

How do I know if my plastic is #5?
Look on the bottom of the container for the little arrow triangle. Inside the triangle there is a number. Different types of plastic have different numbers, and not all numbers are recyclable in all areas. You are looking for a #5 inside the triangle.
See all the things we have found that are #5!

Why is it better to reuse before recycling?
It is better to reuse something before you recycle it, because even though we are saving resources by recycling, it still takes resources and energy to recycle the material. If we can reuse without the added energy and resources it takes to recycle, we are helping the environment even more!

Fast Fact: Did you know that the raw material used to make plastic is oil? The amount of crude oil used to make just 14 plastic grocery bags is enough crude oil for the gasoline to run the average car for a mile! Imagine how much oil you would save by brining reusable bags to the store! (source: https://www.originalgreenbags.com/t-fact4.aspx)
