A Partnership between Moravia local food pantries, community members and the Moravia Central School District
The Moravia School District in partnership with a group of caring community members made the decision during the fall of 2013 to initiate a “backpack program”. Our decision came in response to the realization that many families are struggling financially in this difficult economy and as a result there are children living in our community that do not have enough to eat on a regular basis. While many students receive free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch during the week at school, we realize that they may not have access to regular meals when school is not in session. We are painfully aware that students who lack proper food and nutrition lag behind their peers in terms of their physical development and their ability to learn. The backpack program is designed to provide easy and nutritious foods that children can take home over the weekend and prepare for themselves if and when they are hungry. Children are identified by school staff, and then permission is sought to enroll the child in the program from their parents.
PartnershipIn order to have the necessary funds and food to sustain such a program, we are seeking partners willing to provide either food or funding to us. It is our hope that you or someone you know will be able to make a one time or a regular donation to our program. If you wish to assist us with this project, please contact Faye Reynolds at (315) 406-9305 or Shelly Pflug, Moravia Central School Social Worker at (315) 497-2670 ext. 2054 or your gift may be dropped off to the district office located in the Moravia Middle/High School. Checks can be made out to the Moravia School District – please include “backpack program” on the memo line. In the event that you wish to collect and donate food items, below you will find a list of the things we will need. We hope that you will join us in supporting such an important cause.
