Troopers investigating suspicious incident in Moravia

Feb. 23, 2018 -- State Police in Auburn are investigating an incident that occurred in the village of Moravia on Monday in which a 9-year-old Millard Fillmore Elementary School student was approached by a stranger in a car and offered a ride.

The student, who was walking in rainy conditions near the school to a babysitter’s house, declined the offer and reported the exchange to adults, who then notified state police. Moravia Central Schools are closed this week for winter recess.

School district officials became aware of the investigation Wednesday evening and are cooperating with law enforcement. Superintendent of Schools John Birmingham has asked the Moravia Village Police Department to step up its patrols near the school.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students is the absolute top priority every single day – even days when school is closed,” Mr. Birmingham said.

The superintendent has alerted staff, some of whom are supervising student rehearsals and practices this week, about the episode.

Anyone with information about the incident should call State Police in Auburn at (315) 255-2767.
