Varsity sports teams accepting food donations for backpack program
Sept. 13, 2018 -- Want to cheer on the home team and donate to a worthy cause -- all at the same time? The Moravia High School football team will be accepting food donations for the Moravia Hope Pantry backpack program as the price of admission to both home games this season -- and three other varsity teams will be accepting donations at their games during the last week in September.
The program provides backpacks filled with non-perishable food items to local children and families in need each week throughout the school year. Backpacks are sent home Fridays, so that children who normally have access to breakfast and lunch at school during the week also have nutritious food over the weekend.
Food donations will be accepted during four varsity games scheduled during the week of Sept. 24: field hockey on Sept. 25, girls soccer on Sept. 26, boys soccer on Sept. 27 and football on Sept. 28. All games start at 7 p.m. (The teams also will be accepting monetary donations to help cover the cost of renting portable lights for the special week of night games.) The second home football game is 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.
Food items currently needed by the program:
Peanut butter (small jars and individual serving packets)
Soups with meat, beans or vegetables
Canned tuna and chicken (or foil packets)
