STEAM University provides ‘makerspace’ opportunities for middle-schoolers

Jan. 31 ,2019 -- Moravia Middle School Counselor Tamara Austin took a group of 40 students to a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) University event at Cayuga Community College earlier this month.

Sponsored by Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES' Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee, the makerspace-style program allowed 300 participating students to enroll in two mini courses, including Chinese culture and language, history detectives, Aboriginal culture and art and some that integrated newer technology (drone discovery, critical thinking through coding).

“Students had a chance to meet students from districts across our BOCES while engaging in hands-on topics or learning about subjects that match their interests,” Mrs. Austin said.
