School Social Worker Earns Award from COSBA

The Moravia Central School District’s School Social Worker recently took home a regional award.

Shelaina Pflug was honored for her work by the Cayuga-Onondaga School Boards Association at the Inns of Aurora last month. Each year, COSBA honors outstanding school board members, teachers, administrators, support staff and students for their accomplishments.

Pflug is a member of the counseling department and serves the district in a variety of capacities, such as being on the crisis team and collaborating with other members to ensure the most effective practices are utilized.

“First and foremost, Shelaina is a child advocate,” wrote Chris Fisher, the district’s Director of Special Education. “When working with needy students, Shelaina ensures that they are being provided with adequate services both in and out of school. This may include providing them with counseling or basics such as a warm jacket.”

Pflug has used her knowledge of available resources around the region to begin a variety of initiatives in Moravia, including establishing opportunities for students to attend the Salvation Army Camp on Seneca Lake.

“One of Shelaina’s intangible qualities is her willingness to ‘become involved’ in a situation on a moment’s notice,” Fisher said. “It may be as simple as a child that needs to be walked to class or more involved, such as a student in emotional distress.”
