Karen DiVietro was looking to join a district where the school is the heart and soul of the community.

DiVietro, a former reading teacher who boasts more than 20 years of educational experience, is taking over as the new principal at Millard Fillmore Elementary School after Howard Seamans retired at the end of last school year.

“Before my interview, I went to the playground and saw the flowers out front, and could tell that this school is loved and that this school is an integral part of the community,” DiVietro said. “It’s really what drew me to this position. I felt like I could fit in here.”

A Houghton College and SUNY Cortland graduate, DiVietro started her teaching career with two years in North Carolina. The Homer native then spent 17 years teaching in Cortland and two more in Homer before spending last school year in North Syracuse.

“Through all that, I decided I really wanted to be in a smaller town,” DiVietro said. “I missed the community feel and the way that everybody knows everyone else. This is a family and a community that works together.”

Superintendent John Birmingham said DiVietro stood out among the finalists for the position.

“Karen brings the perfect balance of experience, expertise and energy to the position and we couldn’t be more excited to have her join our team!” Birmingham said. 

DiVietro and the staff at Millard Fillmore Elementary are spending August getting ready for the upcoming school year. For DiVietro, that centers around finalizing schedules, making sure the rooms are clean, and ensuring the staff is ready.

“I’m excited to be in this role in this district,” DiVietro said. “I’ve met some teachers and support staff, as well as some students. Everyone has been so great. I feel so supported.”
