District Hires New Peace Officer

Jon Austin II is getting a chance to serve the community he grew up in.

The Moravia Central School District hired Austin to be the new School Peace Officer through a partnership with the Cayuga County Sheriff's Department. His first official day will be Monday, December 12th.

Austin’s immediate focus will be working with security guard Donald Langtry on safety and security throughout the district.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Austin said of starting the new position. “I enjoyed working for this community when I started my career, and I’ll enjoy doing it again at the end of my career.”

Austin began his law enforcement career in the village of Moravia in 1996. After four years, he moved on to work with the New York State Troopers. He recently retired with more than 22 years of experience from the state police, including time as an instructor. Now Austin is returning home. A Moravia graduate, Austin is married to Tamara Austin, the Middle School Counselor, and the couple have a 9-year-old enrolled in 4th grade in the district.

“I know that I speak for our Board of Education that we couldn’t be more excited about the partnership with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department and most importantly the person selected to fill the post, Jon Austin,” Superintendent John Birmingham said. “Jon brings a level of expertise and enthusiasm that will quickly be noticed by our school community and together with Donnie Langtry are committed to ensuring that all of our students and staff remain safe.

“Please join me in welcoming Jon 'back' to the Blue Devil Family as the newest member of our team!”
