Moravia Students Participate in Welding Skills Bootcamp

Moravia High School sophomores Olivia Harvey and Ryan Witten showcased hard work and skill beyond their years when they recently completed a three-day skills bootcamp hosted by UA Local 81.

During the intensive program held in Ithaca, Harvey and Witten delved into the world of welding, pipefitting, plumbing and HVAR. They learned important welding techniques – such as brazing and soldering – and learned how to cut pipes.

“Welding is something that interests us both. And during a career fair we had at the school, there was a trades section,” Harvey said. “And after talking with the UA Local 81, it seemed like a good fit.”

From sparks to precision, the two students embraced every challenge, proving their dedication to their latest interest. The students were even able to participate in a real-world project.

“The Agway across the street needed some welding done, so we were able to watch their process,” Harvey said. “And then they even let us get in the booth. We we’re so excited!”

Both students intend to continue their journey into welding. By completing the bootcamp, the students earned an interview for a five-year apprenticeship with UA Local 81. If they’re able to complete the apprenticeship, both Harvey and Witten will have obtained a highly sought-after skill in the work force.
