🩵 Fight Flu at Home and School!
Flu (influenza) spreads easily and can make people — especially kids — very sick.
You can help stop the flu from spreading!
Know the Symptoms
Flu symptoms often come on suddenly and may include:
-
Fever or chills
-
Body aches
-
Cough or sore throat
-
Headache
-
Runny or stuffy nose
-
Feeling very tired
-
Some children may also have stomach upset or diarrhea
Prevent the Flu
💉 The flu vaccine is the best protection!
-
Recommended every year for everyone 6 months and older
-
Helps make illness milder or prevent it altogether
-
Get vaccinated early in the fall so you’re protected when flu season begins
-
Encourage babysitters, relatives, and others close to your children to get vaccinated too
-
Especially important for people with asthma, diabetes, or heart/lung conditions
If Your Child Gets the Flu
🏡 Help them recover and keep others safe:
-
Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and fluids
-
Keep them home from school until at least 24 hours after their fever is gone (without fever medicine)
-
Talk to your child’s health care provider before giving any over-the-counter medication
-
Never give aspirin to children or teens — it can cause serious health problems
-
Call your child’s doctor if your child is under 5 or has asthma, diabetes, or heart/lung disease
-
Ask if an antiviral medication is recommended
-
If you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms, contact their provider
Don’t Spread the Flu!
🧼 Healthy habits help everyone stay well:
-
Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
-
Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water aren’t available
-
Cough or sneeze into a tissue or elbow, not your hands
-
Throw tissues in the trash right away
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
-
Stay away from people who are sick
